Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher learning in the United States that were established primarily to serve African Americans, often during a time when racial segregation barred them from attending predominantly white institutions (PWIs).
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have long been a cornerstone of achievement and pride within the African American community and across the nation. Established to provide quality education for Black Americans, HBCUs are defined by the Higher Education Act of 1965 (as amended) as institutions founded before 1964 with a primary mission to educate Black students. These schools must be accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency deemed reliable by the U.S. Secretary of Education or actively working toward accreditation.
HBCUs welcome students of all backgrounds, fostering an environment where individuals can cultivate their talents and realize their potential. Graduates from these institutions excel as leaders in entrepreneurship, professional fields, and both the public and private sectors, making an impact at home and abroad.
